8 Food Companies to Watch

Food companies come and go, but some seem primed to be at the forefront of a revolution. From an app that lets you pay your restaurant bill automatically to a burger chain that’s commanding lines out the door, these eight companies are definitely ones worth watching.

8 Food Companies to Watch (Slideshow)

It’s not easy for an enterprise to stand out from the pack. New companies that promise to disrupt long-standing food conventions start up all the time, but the majority of them barely create a ripple in the vast ocean of noise. But some companies haven’t just managed to create a ripple, they make major waves. And when a company makes waves, people take notice.

In the world of food, there are many, many different types of companies. Restaurants, apps, food products, and specialty services all fall under the “food company” umbrella, and in each of these categories there are firms that are seriously disrupting the status quo. In order to assemble our list of companies to watch, we made sure to look for companies that a lot of people as well as other publications are talking about, including inc., Thrillist, PBS, and Time.

It’s easy to just go about our business sticking to our everyday routines, but things can’t stay the same forever. Some companies are worth taking notice of, because even if they don’t impact you directly they’re still shaking up the food scene in a big way. Read on for eight companies you should definitely be watching.

Queens-based Bareburger has locations in New York, Philadelphia, Toronto, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio, and even Tokyo, and is still rapidly expanding. The secret to its success? High quality ingredients. All meat (including beef, bison, elk, ostrich, lamb, and wild boar) is organic and all-natural, and they’re actually serving healthy burgers, made with lower fat-content meat, all-natural breads, organic and pesticide free vegetables, and cheese from grass-fed cows. Even the décor is sustainable, made with reclaimed wood and recycled vinyl. If there’s one burger chain that’s looking to the future, it’s Bareburger.

Cover, developed by cofounders Mark Egerman and Andrew Cove, lets you dine and dash and not get in trouble for it. Here’s how it works: You download the app, enter your credit card info and preferred tip (which you can change at any time), then let the restaurant know that you’ll be paying with Cover when you arrive. After you’re finished with your meal all you need to do is leave, and the restaurant will automatically charge your card, no questions asked. And if multiple people are dining, it can even be split between them. About 200 of New York’s best restaurants and top spots on San Francisco and Los Angeles are also on board, with more added all the time.

11 Best Netflix Food Documentaries to Watch Right Now

Watch in awe as the world's best chefs&mdashand bug eating cultures&mdashdelight and surprise.

There are 432 documentaries on Netflix right now, according to the tracking website What&rsquos on Netflix. When you&rsquore in the mood to be mesmerized by a Michelin-starred chef who works out of a subway station or a husband-and-wife duo that started serving 15-course dinners out of their apartment, this is the list you&rsquoll want to binge. We&rsquove sprinkled in a few reality checks, too, on hot topics like food waste and sustainability. (We are Prevention, after all.) Oh, and #8 is all about people who eat bugs! Feast your eyes, then move right along to the best health documentaries on Netflix.

Where food and fitness collide, The Game Changers&mdashwhich is executive produced by James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jackie Chan&mdashdelves into the world of plant-based eating and its rise in professional sports. The documentary closely follows James Wilks, an elite Special Forces trainer and winner of The Ultimate Fighter, as he discovers the truths (and exposes the myths) behind meat, protein, and human performance.

You&rsquoll rethink everything you think you know about sushi after watching this acclaimed documentary. The engaging film follows Jiro Ono, who is widely considered the greatest sushi chef in the world, and gives a peek behind the curtain at Sukiyabashi Jiro, his Michelin-starred, 10-seat omakase sushi restaurant hidden in a Tokyo subway station. His tiny, exclusive restaurant draws people from around the world&mdasheven at $300 a plate. While this Netflix food documentary is now eight years old, it&rsquos truly a must-watch.

When chef Jake Bickelhaupt and his wife Alexa started cooking fifteen-course menus out of their apartment, they had no idea their &ldquounderground&rdquo experiment would evolve into a business of their own. Eventually, they take an abandoned chicken joint and turn into a fine dining restaurant: 42 Grams.

A true example of the American Dream, this food documentary highlights what it takes to develop a culinary destination worth visIting, the stress of running the show, and how working as a couple can strain your relationship. Through it all, you&rsquoll become invested in their struggle, and celebrate the highs after feeling the weight of their lows.

Following the seasons on a farm owned by a seventh-generation Illinois farmer, Sustainable shines a light on the beauty and necessity of sustainable farming and the downsides of industrial agriculture, but it doesn&rsquot resort to fear-mongering.

Instead, the film emphasizes the benefits of sustainable farming for the land and our health&mdashall through the lens of farmers and chefs who have made a commitment to sourcing local ingredients. The tone is hopeful rather than damning, and the beautiful cinematography alone makes it worth a watch.

Based on the best-selling cookbook of the same name, this four-part docu-series breaks cooking down into four key elements: salt, fat, acid, and heat. Author and chef Samin Nosrat travels the world to explore how these four simple characteristics play a role in every delicious meal&mdasheven if we don&rsquot realize it.

Along the way, Nosrat gains insight from an Italian nonne who grinds pesto in a mortar and pestle, meets a fifth-generation soy sauce brewer, and even persuades her own mother to share the secret to making perfect tahdig (a crispy Persian rice dish). Throughout the docu-series, Nosrat&rsquos joyful energy and passion for food is infectious&mdashyou&rsquoll wish she was your best friend. This is a food documentary for anyone who delights in the flavor and fellowship of a good meal.

Cooking over fire is an ancient and universal practice, and this beautifully shot food documentary aims to showcase its rich history and global appeal. Australian director Matthew Salleh travels to 12 countries, from South Africa and Mongolia to the Syrian border, uncovering the multitudinous ways that different cultures grill meat&mdashand what it all really means. &ldquoEvery culture has a form of barbecue,&rdquo explains the film&rsquos website. &ldquoIt is the pride of nations. It brings the world together.&rdquo

Forks Over Knives sets out to convince viewers to adopt a plant-based diet&mdashand not necessarily for ethical reasons, but rather for health. The documentary focuses on research that indicates that the risk of developing some chronic illnesses like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes may be decreased by eliminating animal products from our diets.

The film follows researchers in the field as well as everyday people who have had success switching to a whole-food, plant-based diet to cut dependence on pharmaceuticals and take control of their health. Even if you&rsquore not ready to swear off meat for good, this important documentary is worth a watch.

&ldquoWill eating insects save our Earth?&rdquo That&rsquos the question posited by Bugs, a Netflix food documentary that follows chef Ben Reade and researcher Josh Evans as they visit bug-eating cultures around the world. During their journey, they explore the potential for insects as a mainstream food source in response to population growth and food shortages. The film aims to highlight the diversity of insects in terms of flavor and benefits, especially as they are loaded with protein, healthy fats, and other nutrients.

The story of renowned chef Curtis Duffy is not only about food, but also &ldquofamily, balance, and sacrifice,&rdquo the film&rsquos official site states. &ldquoI want to be the best restaurant in the country&ndashthat&rsquos the goal,&rdquo Duffy says of his Chicago restaurant, Grace, in this feature-length documentary. But with that goal of building his dream career came immense personal obstacles. As we revisit Duffy&rsquos difficult childhood, troubled teen years, and family tragedy, viewers get a deep look into the exact price&mdashand rewards&mdashof cooking.

A truly great documentary makes us think and inspires action&mdashand that&rsquos exactly the impact of Theater of Life, which asks, &ldquoWhat if food waste could feed the hungry?&rdquo The film takes you behind the scenes of Italian chef Massimo Bottura&rsquos gourmet soup kitchen, which he created with other renowned chefs at the 2015 Milan Expo.

There, they use food waste to create dishes of the highest caliber for refugees and homeless people. He has since opened up numerous Refettorios&mdasha word that means &ldquoto remake&rdquo or &ldquoto restore&rdquo in Latin&mdashto carry on his mission of reducing food waste, all while feeding hungry people with dignity.

When the UK introduced new guidelines recommending less alcohol consumption for men (lowering it to six pints of beer a week, the same as recommended for women), British ER doc Javid Abdelmoneim set out to find&mdashyou guessed it&mdashthe truth about alcohol. In the funny yet informative documentary, he questions what prompted the change in guidelines, what the health risks (and possible benefits) of drinking are, why some folks get drunker faster, and more on the science behind booze.
