The reason why it is good for children to say NO to their parents

Kelly Flanagan is a licensed psychologist at a clinic in Wheaton, Illinois. He is also a writer, with regular posts about relationships, community and personal life, and the father of three children.

As a parent and psychologist at the same time, the following article explains why it is important for a parent to be happy when their child says "no."

He says that, as a parent, he would like to suppress any desire to oppose the child. But as a psychologist, he rejoices when his children say "No." Here's why …

The sun penetrates the living room window, and the dollhouse is full of lego figurines from Star Wars. Figurines sleeping in cots, sitting on the toilet, cooking breakfast and a Jedi sitting on the roof. On that autumn afternoon, the father and daughter play with the doll's house while the rest of the family sleeps.

Her older brother wakes up, enters the room rubbing his eyes and sees his new gifts scrolling through the dollhouse. His face filled with horror — as if he had seen his dead puppy on the sidewalk — and he hurriedly retrieved his figurines.

The father extends his hand and tries to keep calm. "Give them back to me."

The boy looks at his father and his terrified gaze becomes determined "No!"

The parent in him feels that he was wrong somewhere, because he does not feel respected. He gets angry because he feels he is losing control and he should "take control". And, as a man, he feels pure sadness because suddenly, the day promises to be ominous.

But the psychologist in it is secretly delighted because his little boy said "No."

Because the inability to say "no" —the inability to set personal limits — is one of the most common sources of human suffering.

When we don't know how to say "No,"

- we become like a sponge that absorbs the feelings of everyone around us and in the end we get tired of the needs of others while our own hearts go out and die,

- we begin to live our lives as others say must, and not as we want,

- we allow everyone to create the story we have to live and we are no longer the authors of our own lives,

- we lose our personality - we lose the desire planted in souls, along with that unique way in which we can live our own dreams and purpose in life,

- We don't leave use of the world instead of being helpful the world,

- we give in to the pressures of a friend and we drink and drive and put our lives in danger,

- we are convinced by an insistent friend and we wake up pregnant,

- we let ourselves be carried away by the promotions of some products and we find ourselves buried in debts,

- we allow the boss to take advantage of us and we find that we work long hours overtime and arouse quarrels at home,

- we take care of every need of children and we start to have resentments when they ask us for something and we start to imagine what it would be like to live on an isolated island in the Caribbean,

- we find only partners who are not good for us, who drink too much or work too much or play gambling or flirt with other women and we find that we lose any control over our own lives.

The ways in which our lives lose their quality due to the inability to say "No." are unlimited.

Dr. Kelly Flanagan, when he has a patient destroyed by his own ragged boundaries, often asks, "How did your parents react when you said 'No' to them when you were a child?" And, invariably, the answer is, "Oh, I wouldn't dare say 'No' to my parents."

So, that morning, my father had to make a decision. Did he suppress his little rebellion? Do you raise your voice? Does he ask her to share? Threatening something? Threat with anything? Or take a deep breath and remember why it is sometimes good to say "yes" when you are told "no":

In the family you learn for the first time that you can say "No" in an environment full of encouragement and support. If we don't learn this in the family either, we won't learn it anywhere. When our children can't say "No" to us, they won't be able to tell anyone.

When your son receives drugs or your daughter is offered an adventure in the back seat, you want them to have experienced enough to say "NO". Because, one day, it will be something more than some Lego figurines and, until then, it is good to be aware that their own value is not endangered for a second if they do not please others.

You want them to know their voices counts.

You want to know that They they are the authors of their own stories.

That he must learn to mark his limits constructively and not aggressively? Yes. That he must learn to compromise? Sure. That he must learn to choose wisely the moments when they must be obedient? Of course.

But it all starts with a "No."

Because the truth is like you can't really tell "Yes" until you learn to say "No." We need to know that we have the freedom to to choose in life. Freedom to say "No" is the beginning of the ability to say "Yes." The new self. Life. Love.

So, that morning, my father gave in. Some days the father wins. And so it must be. Sometimes children need their parents not to give up. But that day the father gave in, because he thought that if someone had a desperate look as if only his puppy had died, he had something to say.

And what did the stubborn boy have to say?

"Dad, they're mine and I decide if they play with them." And he chooses some of the figurines he takes in his hand to return to his sister.

A child who assumes the right to give and share. A "No" that reminds us that it is very good to ask before. A "No" that teaches us that the boy's heart is young, restless and insecure, but also full of warmth. A "No" that underlies a genuine "Yes."

Because, in the end, we can't really say "Yes" to our self and the language of love, until we are allowed to say "No" to the voices around us.

One more reason to say "Yes" with great joy when you are answered with "No."

The gingerbread house is every child's dream, and not only! If we are creative we can build a perfect gift for someone special.

Beat the butter with the brown sugar until it foams. Add in order: honey, egg, salt, spices and finally flour in portions. To make the work easier, it is recommended to use a slightly stronger mixer (towards the end, the dough will be hard). Divide the dough into 2 balls, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Meanwhile, prepare the templates: 2 rectangles, one with the side of 16.5 / 9 (side of the house) and 18/14 (roof). The facade of the house 16/9 to the roof, and the line on which the roof rests, 11 cm.
Spread the sheets about 0.5 cm thick between 2 plastic sheets and cut 2 of each pattern. Bake for approx. 15 min. To be more handsome than mine, you can take it out of the oven halfway through the baking process, apply the pattern over the cake, and cut off the excess and cut out the door and windows. I preferred to cut everything from the beginning, due to lack of time. After they are baked, put them on a towel to cool. CAREFUL!! the cooling surface should be flat.
When the walls have cooled, you can start assembling and decorating the house.

GLUE: in a bowl, beat the egg whites with lemon juice, putting a tablespoon of powdered sugar, approx. 10 min.

It is preferable for the dough to be made today, to be baked tomorrow and to be assembled the day after tomorrow.

The gingerbread house is served after a few days, when the glue has hardened perfectly and the biscuits are soft.

It's like a fairytale mountain house

Yes, I liked the roof with plants and the fact that it is so simple and cleverly arranged inside, not to mention the surrounding natural landscapes. Undoubtedly a place to be quiet, to be with you or with a few loved ones. It is a mountain house that is not equipped with electricity or heating, a traditional Norwegian construction, built on the site of a peasant household from 1782. It took care of its rescue and recovery. Else Rønnevig, author of books on rustic architecture and a passionate activist for tradition In Norway.

You will discover here a very ingenious interior organization. Chalet practically has 65 square meters in total and a single room, but the positioning of the furniture ensures the presence of functions. I really liked the way the sleeping spaces are designed, like big niches where you can nest, and above you have bookshelves. It is also worth noting the central place where the fireplace is located. Like a hearth in the house, the heat from it spreads evenly and evenly inside the cottage. Too bad, if you want to make a mountain cottage, it's worth considering this organization (see that I would post your house plan at the end).

In order to keep the heat in the house as good as possible, the ceiling is paneled, so it is not open to the roof, even if this makes the interior darker and lower in height. Also, until the entrance to the house there is a hall and an annex so that the wind and cold do not enter directly into the large living space. In order to preserve its historical character, Else used for the interior decoration paints without solvents, prepared according to old recipes to obtain a special shade of blue, but also green and ocher applied on some rustic furniture pieces. One of the doors is recovered and intentionally left with the old layers peeling off the paint on it. And about the stars on the ceiling from the bathroom, I can tell you that they are made of gold leaf. A fairytale house! I hope it inspires you too!

I like this cake. I was preparing something similar, but I called it the cottage.

8 eggs
8 tablespoons sugar
9 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons oil
1/2 sachet of baking powder
2 teaspoons vanilla essence
300 ml liquid cream
a little coconut
1 pineapple compote
2 bananas
1 sachet of vanilla cream
3 tablespoons powdered sugar
250 ml of sweet milk

From the above ingredients I prepared 2 houses. One for home and one for children. We separate the eggs, the egg whites beat very well together with the sugar. Mix the yolks together with the oil and a pinch of salt. Then add the vanilla essence. Lightly mix the yolks in the oil and then sift the flour together with the baking powder. Put the fluffy and fragrant composition when baked in 2 cake trays.
After baking, let the countertops cool then cut the top that will form the roof. In the middle we syrup a little with the compote juice then we put pieces of pineapple on a box, and on the other we put a little cherry jam and then the bananas cut lengthwise. Cover the fruit with vanilla cream and the walls of the cottage.
Vanilla cream:
Mix the milk together with the whipped cream powder and vanilla sugar. Separately mix the liquid cream well then mix it in vanilla cream. We put the roofs of the cabins, which we then cover completely in cream. Sprinkle a little coconut and you're done.

Built in 1866, Aurelia Bodea's house received a new roof, but also made of straw

Straw-roofed houses still exist. It happens in one of the most beautiful villages of Maramureş, Preluca Nouă! Here, the old age and the rustic are not assimilated with poverty and old-fashionedness, moreover, the locals have started to value the values of the past. Instead of demolition, two families have repaired nearly two-century-old houses inherited from great-grandparents and say they will still live within the clay-glued wooden walls. This was possible with the help of some Maramures residents determined to restore some of the authentic charm of the primordial village, convinced of the immense potential of the hill villages.

Aurelia Bodea was born under the thatched roof of her parents' house and still lives here, in Preluca Nouă. He also has a new house built of vaults but prefers to live in the old house. The wooden beams bear the date of construction, which was built in 1866. The thatched roof lasted impeccably in time, until two years ago, when it was replaced with a brand new one, also made of straw. The mites are still in time and the household as a whole is more like the setting of a story staged over time.

Mircea Mihnea is a representative of the "Casa Maramureşană" Association established three years ago. The purpose of the association is to restore old Moroccan houses doomed to extinction, in an authentic form without any smell of kitsch. The challenge of the association was also accepted by Aurica Miclea, the owner of an old house whose roof started to deteriorate. With the money raised from sponsorships, Mircea Mihnea hired the last craftsmen in the county skilled in covering the houses with straw. They rebuilt the roof of the house in just two days. The owner says that she would not change the traditional house for anything in the world for a modern one and that in a few years she will leave it as an inheritance to the two boys she has.

The Urban Peasant is me, Roxana

Knead a dough from all the ingredients, I put the margarine which is softer and then I passed the flour, to say another 100 grams. Refrigerate the dough for 30 minutes.

Separate 2 eggs. Separately in a bowl, mix: cheese with oil, 175 gr. sugar, vanilla sugar and lemon juice. Then add the pudding powder, milk, 2 egg yolks and a whole egg. It mixes very well, and from this composition I took separately a maglavais polish in which I put about 40 gr. Mac.

I greased the tart form with a little oil, powdered it with flour and spread the dough nicely.

Over which I spread the poppy composition beautifully and over which I overturned the simple cheese composition.

And in the oven with it at a temperature of about 200 degrees at first, then I dropped to 170-18, for about 40 minutes.

Meanwhile, I mixed the remaining 2 egg whites with 50 grams of powdered sugar, and I spread the meringue composition randomly over the tart taken out of the oven, I pressed some raisins in the oven for another 10 minutes until the meringue is browned.

And in order for the meringue syrup to come out, that is, for the dew to appear, cover the tart while it is hot with a plastic dome, until it cools completely.
Leave to cool, and then cut into slices can be served with a cup of coffee for dessert.

Cake recipes. Here is a tender and creamy cake for the holidays. It's a tried and tested recipe from my mother's cookbook.

Mix all the ingredients for the sheets, add the flour little by little, then knead. The composition is divided into two pieces. From the first part, make 2 sheets that stretch on the bottom of a tray with baking foil and after they have settled, cut them into 3 parts in length.

Bake at the right heat, being careful due to the thin sheets. Do the same with the second sheet. 6 elongated sheets are obtained.

In the second composition, put 2 large spoons of cocoa, knead and make 12 long sticks, the size of the tray, which are also baked on the bottom of the tray.

How to prepare the cream

For the cream, boil the 3 vanilla puddings in a liter of sugar-free milk and let it cool completely. Separately, rub the margarine well with the powdered sugar. When the 2 compositions have cooled completely, mix and fill the sheets.

From the 2 sheets divided into 3, the middle one is placed on a tray, a layer of cream, 3 sticks is put, and a layer of cream, 2 sticks, cream and on top another stick that is also covered with cream. Grease the remaining 2 sheets a little with cream and put them on the edge. Be careful when handling the cream. Let it reach you! Optionally you can glaze and sprinkle with coconut. Leave for a few hours in the refrigerator or in a cool place to soften the sheets. It is sliced, in width, of course, into two-finger-thick pieces.
