Candied Bacon Maker’s Cocktail
The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo., created some delicious bacon-inspired cocktails for the colder months.
- 2 Ounces bacon-infused Maker's Mark
- 1 Ounce pure maple syrup
- 1/2 Ounce lemon juice
- 1/2 Ounce applekorn liquor
Par-cook 1 slice applewood-smoked bacon in oven at 425 degrees. Dust bacon with sugar and reduce temperature to 375 degrees so the sugar dissolves and melts into a candy coating on the bacon slice. Mix all of the liquid ingredients in a shaker with plenty of ice. Shake vigorously and pour into a rocks glass. Garnish with candied bacon slice and lemon twist.

Many people have fallen in love with candied bacon. The combination of sweet and savory is irresistible. Whether eaten on its own, used as a cocktail garnish, served on a breakfast board or a variety of other options, it is a recipe that any bacon lover needs to try.
Basically, a candied bacon only has a handful of ingredients. In addition to the bacon, it is usually maple syrup, brown sugar and a seasoning. Here is a recipe from HORMEL Black Label Bacon.
Bacon is most commonly cooked on the stovetop or in the oven. If you’re opting for the former, start with a cold pan with the bacon strips touching, but not overlapping. Set the burner on low and allow the bacon to slowly release its fat. As it begins to cook, use tongs to flip the strips and fry them on their opposite sides. Continue to flip and turn until the bacon is browned evenly. Let the cooked bacon drain by carefully placing them on paper towels or a newspaper.
To cook bacon in the oven, simply line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and arrange the bacon strips on its surface. If your baking sheet does not have grooved edges, be sure to fold the aluminum corners upwards to catch excess grease. Bake at 400°F for ten to 20 minutes (depending on your texture preference), remove, and place bacon strips on paper towels or a newspaper. The bacon will crisp as it cools.

Pork is easiest to thaw when placed in the refrigerator in its original wrapping. Small roasts will take three to five hours per pound, while larger roasts can take up to seven hours per pound. Thawing ground pork depends entirely on the thickness of its packaging.
It is safe to cook frozen or partially-frozen pork, but its cooking time may take 50 percent longer. Frozen pork should not be cooked in a slow cooker.
Candied bacon martini

1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
Heat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil, shiny side up. Dredge the bacon on both sides in the brown sugar and arrange the slices so they do not touch on the sheet. Bake until the bacon is richly caramelized, 15 to 25 minutes. Use a pair of tongs to transfer the bacon strips to a cooling rack and allow the excess fat to drain. Serve warm as candy or cool until hardened for the martinis.
Candied bacon martinis
4 ounces Applejack brandy
2 ounces amaretto liqueur
2 ounces maple syrup, preferably grade “B”
4 thin slices tart apple, such as Granny Smith
2 slices candied bacon, halved crosswise
Chill 4 martini glasses. In a large cocktail shaker, combine the vodka, brandy, amaretto and maple syrup with ice. Shake until combined and chilled. Strain the cocktail into the 4 chilled glasses and garnish each with an apple slice and half a slice of candied bacon. Serve immediately.

Maple-Bacon Old Fashioned
2 ounces bacon-infused bourbon (above)
1/2 ounce maple syrup
Dash Peychaud's cocktail aromatic bitters
Dash Angostura orange bitters
Ice cubes, for mixing
Large spherical ice cube, for serving
Crisp piece bacon, for garnish
Orange wheel, for garnish
Maraschino cherry, for garnish
To make the bacon-infused bourbon: Place the bacon in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook, stirring frequently, until the bacon has rendered all of its fat and turned crisp. Using a slotted spoon, remove the bacon bits and save for another use.
In a large jar, combine the bacon fat with the bourbon. Stir, then refrigerate until the fat solidifies. Use a spoon to remove the fat and reserve for another use, such as grilled corn. Strain the bourbon through a triple layer of coffee filters into a second jar. If the filter backs up, replace with clean filters as needed. Refrigerate until ready to use.
To make the cocktail: Place the bourbon, maple syrup and both bitters in a cocktail mixing glass filled with ice. Stir until well-chilled and then strain into a rocks glass. r, add a handful of ice. Shake well and strain into an Old Fashioned glass. Add the spherical ice cube, bacon slice, orange wheel and cherry. Serve immediately.

It’s hard to imagine bacon being any better than straight out of the frying pan.
But that’s where you’ll need to stretch the outer limits of your imagination because it does indeed get better. Much better.
At least for those moments you’re craving something both salty and sweet. It’s called candied bacon. Or bacon candy as I’ve also seen it called.
Sweet, salty, smoky, and umami galore with an irresistible crispy-chewy texture. That’s what you have to look forward to. And candied bacon is more versatile than you might think: Crumble it on creamy soups and chowders, salads, add it to sandwiches and even crumble it on desserts for a wow-worthy effect!
Of course my favorite way to enjoy it is all by its glorious self – it’s just insanely good!
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use either mesh baking rack or line a baking pan with foil and spray with nonstick spray.
Lay the strips of bacon in a single layer on the rack or baking pan. Divide and drizzle the maple syrup over each slice.
Sprinkle some brown sugar over each slice and then grind some black pepper over them.
Be sure to use freshly ground black pepper for the best flavor. You’ll love the addition of its earthy spiciness along with the sweetness of the brown sugar and maple syrup.
Bake for about 25 minutes or until the bacon is crispy.
Let the candied bacon cool for a few minutes until they’ve firmed up.

Ingredients for Smoked Bacon Candy
Before you make the bacon candy, give the bacon a bath.
In a large mixing bowl combine a half cup of brown sugar and a half cup of maple syrup.
Mix it thoroughly until you have a thick sugary paste. Open your pack of bacon and using a pair of tongs put each bacon slice into your bowl, one by one. Once all of the bacon is in the bowl, toss the pieces in the mixture until all of them have a sticky coating of brown sugar and maple syrup.
What can you use Candied Bacon for?
If you can manage to get the bacon to a plate without eating it all first, you can serve it up for breakfast. But I’m envisioning much more than breakfast for this bacon! I see it in chocolate chip cookies. I see it sprinkled on top of maple cupcakes. I see it in my dinner salad. And I see it crunched into pancakes too. Are you craving it with me now?
